Gillian T asked this question about Nevada:
Is this book suitable for young teens? I'm looking for a book that could give young teenage girls an idea of transgender issues, transition etc.
Isaac Wood I don't think it's suitable for younger teens but its definitely a very good book, but depending on the maturity of your reader it might work. Instead, I'd highly recommend George by Alex Gino (it was the first book I read with a transgender character while in middle school, although I'm a transgender guy.) I think George is suitable for elementary and middle school books. If your audience is slightly older I'd also highly recommend If I Was Your Girl by Meridith Russo, a very good book that makes trans issues accessible and understandable information to really anyone. Especially good for teenage girls because it has a really great girls supporting girls storyline (super cute). It follows a highschool age transgender girl with her experiences going to a local highschool for the first time after transitioning and her forming relationships within that. I think there was super super mild sexual content (maybe just went a little further than kissing) and a little substance abuse (there is some teenage drinking and a little smoking weed.)
Best of luck on your hunt! (less)
