Goodreads asked Lulu Smith:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lulu Smith I went on a trip to New York by myself to see some Broadway shows and the main character, Ally Brown, started talking to me in my head and telling me bits and pieces of her story. Prior to becoming an attorney, I had worked as a legal assistant, so I wanted to tell a story from the point of view of someone who works in the field of law but wasn't a lawyer. Her boss, Tristan-Malcolm Reynolds was inspired by a picture of actor Timothy Omundson that just embodied the whole character and took on a life of his own.
