A Goodreads user asked Kasie West:

Hi, Kasie! I have two questions for you today. First, this is something that I've been wondering for a while: did "The Distance Between Us" draw inspiration from Gilmore Girls? Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorite shows, and when I read "The Distance Between Us," I couldn't help but notice a few similarities--mainly, in the family dynamics, particularly between Caymen and her mother.

Kasie West That's a great question. So I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan. I watched it from beginning to end. I loved the relationship between Rory and Lorelai. Gilmore Girls ended in 2007. I wrote The Distance Between Us in 2011. Any similarities were completely unintentional. I didn't think as I was writing that I was going to try to make a relationship like the one from Gilmore Girls. That said, did some inspiration sneak in there without me realizing it? Probably! Like I said, I'm a huge fan. I'm sure there was some Gilmore Girls banter sitting in the back of my brain, ready to come pouring into a story. I'm very happy with the comparison, so thank you for pointing it out. :)
