Goodreads asked Bil Richardson:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Bil Richardson I wanted to do a mid-grade book because that is when we as people are at a crossroads. That's when we are trying to figure out who we are. That's when we stop being what someone else tells us to be and start trying to figure out who we actually are. It is also when I started writing. I think the years between 9 and 14 are the most formative years in a person's life and I wanted to talk to those readers and tell them it's OK to be different. It's OK to be imperfect. If people are unkind to you that's because they are broken, not you. Igor and Frank are the ultimate outsiders and they show us that the outside of a person is irrelevant. It's what is inside that really matters.
