Goodreads asked Shane McCartney:

How do you get inspired to write?

Shane McCartney It never occurred to me that I would ever end up writing a book, but I knew that if I did it would have to be a work of fiction. I'm an avid historical crime reader, and after many decades with my legs up reading many historical crime novels, I thought I would try writing one myself.
Being a ‘Mañana’ kind of person; I was aware that the project would take great effort and hard work. It happened to be the anniversary of my mother’s death at the time, so I decided to dedicate the book in her memory, and RATLINED was born. My mother battled Dementia for several years, and I decided to use that tragic experience and interlace it into my book. This was a theme, at the time, seemingly insignificant but turned out to be a pivotal factor in the storyline. The plot grew naturally through my experiences.
