The Secrets at Ocean’s Edge was inspired by an article I read about the Great Emu War of 1932. The Australian Army was brought in to cull emus decimating wheat crops at Campion in WA, using Lewis automatic machine guns left over from WWI. It made me wonder about the lingering effects of WWI and the private wars that men and women were still fighting those many years later. I set the novel further north, in the MidWest, as I used to live there and love the landscape.
