Over the years, many of my students who suspected I had interesting stories to share encouraged me to write a memoir. After I retired, I entertained a former student, a former high school friend, and a graduate school friend with tales of my life in lengthy e-mail responses. Then after a colleague/friend committed suicide, I started thinking about how little I knew about him. I wondered what his story was, and that eventually led me to tell my story.
