asked:
Do I need to read The Creature in the Case before continuing on to Goldenhand? I just finished Clariel and was a little annoyed after reading the author's note in the back saying that Goldenhand takes place after the events in this novella. Will I be missing anything if I just skip over it?

The novella is mostly flavor. We see a bit of Lirael in action properly and the first appearance of her goldenhand is in this story. Other than that, it builds up some of the Ancelstierre world a bit more as well as Nick's story. There's nothing crucial to the overarching plot that you can't pick up from the other books like the allusions to Nick's blood/magic.
