Drew Ziemba asked Michael Grant:

So, if there was no water cycle in the FAYZ, and the FAYZ had been around for at least a year, how were any of the plants able to survive? It's even mentioned in Light that without rain, the trees were dry, so they weren't unaffected by the lack of rain, so how would they be able to survive so long, with so little water? Does it have to do with the Powers of the FAYZ?

Michael Grant Excellent question. Bear in mind the FAYZ only lasts a year, and bear in mind as well that Southern California is basically a desert where sometimes there's no real rain for a year. I'd thought I'd have to deal with this if the series went on much further, and you'll note that toward the end we do start to see drought.
