Vickie
Vickie asked Joy Ellis:

In Fire On The Fens there was a Mary Ellis of the Air Transport Auxiliary, is she by any chance a real person?

Joy Ellis Absolutely! She was one of the last female World War Two pilots. She died at aged 101 (one year older than the RAF!) She flew fighters and bombers and was one of the few pilots who could fly a massive twin-engine Wellington bomber solo! And she was only 5' 2" in height. She survived a crash landing and enemy fire whilst delivering the new planes to their respective airfields. What a woman!
