Many of my reluctant reader students are interested in scary stories, but I need the scary hook to be in the first couple of chapters. I enjoyed the Thin Executioner, but the creepy bits were a long way into the story. Which of your books would you recommend to get my students hooked fast?

Darren Shan I don't really think of Thin Executioner as a horror book. Most students connect quickly with Cirque Du Freak, which is the book of mine that is most used in schools. Lord Loss is another one you might like to check out -- that one begins with a real bang, with a slaughter coming nice and early in chapter 2!!! :-)
