me asked Trent Reedy:

Dear Mr. Reedy, What inspired you to write so many different parts about Mike's life in "If You're Reading This?" Did you relate to him, or was he just completely made up? Sincerely, a huge fan Simone Rajput

Trent Reedy Thanks for reading IF YOU'RE READING THIS, Simone, and thanks for your question. IF YOU'RE READING THIS is inspired by a lot of different parts of my life. Mike's father, Sergeant Mark Wilson, wrote letters from a tour in the war in Afghanistan that was a lot like the tour I served in Afghanistan, with many of the dates and missions taken right out of my notebooks from the war. Some of the parental advice Mike's father passes along is advice I would have given, or words of wisdom my father gave me. Mike's experiences in football mirror my own, except that he was actually good at football. And Mike's letter to his late father at the end of the book was mostly a letter from me to my late father. IF YOU'RE READING THIS was a difficult book to write, in no small part because a lot of it came from my life. Thanks again, for reading and for your great question. I wish you the best.
