Margaret asked Martha Hall Kelly:

Hi Martha, Just a couple of lingering questions for you now that I've finished your good read. 1) One of my favorite parts was of the workman (Mr. Window Maker) that would sing the current news to the girls at the camp in French. Was this true? 2) You write there were Chinese in the camps. What did you find as reasons for their imprisonment? 3) Is the overfilling of a champagne glass truly a French thing?

Martha Hall Kelly Great questions, Margaret. You're such a close reader! 1) Yes, the German Mr. Window Maker was based on a true account. I love him. 2) There was a Chinese daughter of a diplomat at Ravensbruck, arrested in Paris for her work in the underground. 3) Yes, the overfilling of a champagne glass is a French thing. My wonderful former hair stylist Bernard Dugaud told me about it. He is from Paris and we often talked more about the book than hair when I was in his chair. :)
