How can you write so darkly?

Michael Grant Interesting question. Another kidlit author has on a couple of occasions invited me to dinner parties and I decline by explaining that I am the Gilfoyle of parties - a Silicon Valley TV show reference meaning that I am dark and depressing. I watch chat shows and people have funny anecdotes. I have anecdotes that start out funny and end with me either doing or saying something appalling. It's like, "Haha ha ha ha. . . wait. . . you did what?"

I've concluded that I don't think like normal people. It's strange because I'm generally a pretty happy, optimistic guy.

Hey Big fan of your books especially the Gone series with all its amazing character and thrilling story. Which character was your favorite and least favorite to write? Also how did you decide which powers each character would get like Sam and Cain for instance? Did you ever just give a character powers just to advance the story or did you always know which character will have powers?
