I recently finished reading HESTER by Laurie Albanese and really enjoyed it. It was the fictionalized story of the woman behind Hawethorne's inspiration for the SCARLET LETTER. I really enjoyed HESTER and wanted to then read the story that inspired it. The language in SCARLET LETTER can be difficult at times because the sentences go on and on. I listened to it as an unabridged audio book and that made it better. The narrator knew when to pause during those really long sentences to get the thought across.(less)
