Dickens drew on from his own experiences as a child labor and tough childhood to portray the ordeals and adventures of David. David Copperfield shared the same ambitions of becoming a great author with Dickens. Also, his stint as a reporter and with short hand are also one of the commonalities.
Other than these, it is often inferred that the magnificiently impecunious character of Mr Micawber was inspired after Dickens' father who often ran into indebtedness and had troubles managing finances.(less)
