At first when I read Crucible, I thought it was just a reference to The Crucible by Arthur Miller. What made you go with the science definition of "crucible"?

Josephine Angelini I wanted it to be both a reference to that great play and then to take the reference one step deeper and have it describe what crucibles actually do inside their bodies. I wanted the word to have dual functions, and I'm glad you found that.
