Goodreads asked Aimee Herman:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Aimee Herman "Everything Grows" was a ten year project. Although to be more accurate, it may have begun when I first learned how to take thoughts, observations, and the imprint of memories and translate them into sentences. This book is a travelogue of my scars. It is a piece of me and a bigger slice of the humans that have been around me all these years. I wanted to write a character that I would have been friends with, one who might have been like a superhero for me during I time I needed one most. I wanted to write about queer love and the complexity of that because when I was 15 (age of my protagonist), I had no one to ask my questions to. There was no such things as Google. I also wanted to bring out what has been lost (or is rapidly dying): the art of letter writing and how handwriting is one of the most intimate things we can give to someone.
