For me, being a writer makes every aspect of life feel worthwhile. There is no such thing as boredom or wasted time; every observation and experience adds to the midden I'm later able to draw from. This is an enormous joy, and amounts to something on the order of a belief system: my writing life ignites the everyday world and imbues it with meaning and mystery. I would write even if I never showed my work to anyone, and I feel lucky for every reader who finds something worthwhile in my work.
