The author seemed to keep this as unlike the end of a Jane Austen novel as possible--no marriage pact here. It appears that Cora and Will had a deep friendship that at least once included benefits. I think the passage about the word cleave best summed it up. They were both deeply attached to each other yet knew they could never be totally together.
