Goodreads asked Adrian Bartholomew:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Adrian Bartholomew I had a mental breakdown that resulted in hospitalization at a mental institution. During my stay, I kept a journal of the events as they transpired. This served as the backbone of the tale that was later fleshed out into something with a bit more readability.

Or; I was frustrated with answering the same questions constantly. People were concerned and curious, but I have a fear of repeating myself. So I wrote it all down as a means of further avoiding the topic.

Or; I wasn't exactly sure what led to my mental breakdown. I know that it was caused by multiple points of stress, but I was unable to exactly identify those points. This was a means of looking at the story with a bit of objectivity in order to further understand what led me there.

Take your pick. They're all valid answers.
