Jeanne asked Stuart Gibbs:

Please forgive the 2nd question. But Space Case is especially v. good at inclusivity. BUT all the families, aside from one, are mom, dad, kids with Dad's name. IN 2029! Not one family decided to take the mom's name? Even hyphenated? Among the highly educated this is more and more common, and all your adults (well, most) are highly educated and intelligent. And ALL heterosexual? It's hard to consider reading w/my girl.

Stuart Gibbs Read Waste Of Space. It deals with the homosexuality issue. And you're not gong to like the answer to the hyphenating thing, but... It is really difficult to read books with long hyphenated names appearing al the time. An extremely multisyllabic name interrupts the flow of the story. I mean no gender discrimination, which is why many of the families actually have hyphenated names, but it is easier to read the other way. Sorry.
