Never give up, be realistic but trust your gut feeling. Be your own worst critic and do not publish a mediocre piece of work. Give it your all and only then can you truly say that you've tried your hardest to produce the best possible product for your intended readers.
Write, write, write. Edit, edit, edit. Re-write, re-write, re-write. Finishing a book is great but remember that this does not mark the end - what comes after is just as important, if not more. And toughen up. Not everyone will like your style and genre, but that's okay, learn to roll with it. :-)
