A teacher of Hans' (the protagonist of the novel) warns Hans, when he begins to neglect his schoolwork, that he is in danger of being "crushed beneath the wheel," a metaphor for saying that if Hans does not apply himself robotically to his school work, he will suffer. Of course, the main concept of the novel is realizing the value of succeeding in a school compared to that of living soulfully and poetically, is inferior.
