A Goodreads user asked Kendare Blake:

I know you're adopted from Korea, and I think that's really cool. I myself am adopted from China. Would you ever write a main character who is adopted from East Asia? It's very rare for me to see developed East Asian characters in American popular culture, especially as a protagonist. It's almost unheard of for an internationally adopted Asian one. So is that something you'd ever do in one of your Y/A series? Thanks!

Kendare Blake It is rare to see, and I would love to see more. I don’t think I’ll be the one to do it though. Are you a writer? Maybe there’s one of those characters waiting inside you!

Every time I write an Asian American adoptee I think readers will assume the story is autobiographical, or that the character is a lot like me. I know that’s weird, but I can’t shake it. Heck, the character probably would wind up being slightly autobiographical, and that’s just not something I can bring myself to do. I’m shy, dammit!
