Goodreads asked Nicholas Petrarch:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Nicholas Petrarch I was in college working an insane number of hours on a student newspaper. Between late nights spent printing, a full course load, and a fitful social life I sometimes only had time for a quick nap before it was back to the grindstone. It was during one of these naps that I had a Miyazaki-esk dream which first inspired the idea of writing a conflict between alchemists and clockwork mechanists.

I recorded that dream on a 3x5 card and tucked it away without another thought until years later when Brandon Sanderson challenged me to start something new and fresh. Sifting through my concept vault, I found that card and began work on what became The Clockwork Calamity. The story no longer looks like it did on that 3x5 card; it's become so much more thanks to many conversations with fellow writers and friends.
