Although it could likely be read as a stand-alone book if you were only interested in the mystery, I think a big part of these books is actually what happens with the characters. So, yes, you would be missing quite a bit of Ruth's personal storyline if you don't read the books in order. There is quite a lot of life that happens from book to book.
