Virginia Garrett asked Jameson Parker:

Are there two characters named Hamidullah in A Passage to India? At first the character is referred to with a masculine pronoun, then called an "aunt" and referred to with in the feminine, and then reverts back to the masculine. This is my first foray into Forester. So far I'm not a huge fan. The characters seem somewhat one-dimensional. But I do have a migraine...

Jameson Parker Only one character by that name, as I recall, but I'm intrigued by the pronoun confusion. Could you tell me which edition of "A Passage to India" you are reading, and where in the book the confusion appears (Part I, II, or III, and which chapter), and I'll see if I can clear it up? For the record, I regularly find typos missed by proofreaders, more frequently in recent books than in books published many decades ago prior to computer use, and have also found typos in some of my own books, unfortunately after the nick of time (publication date). The eye sees what it expects to see.
