Tim, wanted to thank you for your book Chasing the Devil. I've been to Liberia twice in the past 2 years. Our church has been involved with the work at Ganta Hospital for >10 years, so I've been able to make some solid connections there. Reading your book took me right back to this land I've come to love. Any plans to return there? Or are any of your other books set in West Africa?
Tim Butcher
Julie – thanks for your note. No current plans for a return although I keep in touch with the wonderful Johnson Boie, our guide from 2009 who walked every step of the way of the journey. He remains up in Lofa but often gets down to the coast. As for Ganta, I remember those soft mornings so well, the smell of the fresh baguettes in town made by the Guinean baker. I have some letters from Winifred Harley in the 1930s that might amuse you, the founder of the Methodist Mission and Hospital that developed into the town of Ganta. Send me your email address using the GoodReads message system perhaps and I will happily email you scans if it would be of interest.

These questions only give us so many characters, so I apologize for another question! I am an International Development student and my dream is to be a humanitarian journalist/photojournalist. I specifically love East Africa. I am wondering if you have any career advice for someone aspiring to do something similar to you? How did you start out in travel writing?

Tim: Just for you information. Chasing The Devil Kindle has not been available here in the US for at least 5 years I have been searching for it that long. Could it be that Amazon Kindle messed up by offering the Chasing The Devil by Sheriff Reichert and mistakenly took yours off as a duplicate? Think how many sales you have missed by this mistake. Thousands.
