It depends what is more scary to you: what you see or your own imagination. I can remember watching the movie when I was about 8, and the gruesome parts left quite an impression.
Especially when Holly tells them about the demise of their home.
The book is a lot more detailed, there is much more dialogue and therefore more character building, especially Hazel is a lot more three-dimensional in the book.
Whether you will find it sad or traumatic, it's a great story and you should give it a try :)

From what I remember the book was just as upsetting as the movie. If anything, the novel has some dark scenes that did not make it onto the screen.
