I have always been intrigued by nature v nurture. Why does one person rise above a problematic childhood, yet, another lets it affect the rest of their life. When the MP Jo Cox, was murdered, after the initial shock and disgust, I began to think about the individual who carried out the horrific attack. What happened in his childhood? What happened in his life that lead him to this stage? I then had the theme that was central to the novel. A character that allows a childhood incident to have a disastrous impact on his life.
