I was a bit confused about that too. I *think* that maybe it was because magic not only returned but everyone had access to it somehow? (Hence, what Princess Amara could do?). Of course, I could be totally wrong.

It bothered me that the ending was so ambiguous. They seemed to be indicating that the ritual didn’t work but Amari had some magic, so...? Did everyone in the temple become a maji? Did Amari simply take her brother’s place in the “plan” since he didn’t live up to his potential? Is it just people who have touched the artifacts that have magic now? Who knows. I think the point of the ambiguity at the end was that you will have to wait until the next book in the series to find out.
