Gail Carson Levine:
I've always loved your retelling of classic fairytales, and I'm excited to read "Ogre Enchanted". I've never heard of "The False Prince and the True" before, but now that I looked it up, I like it a lot. Do you have a favorite fairy tale that you haven't been able to use in your books yet? Do you ever read other author's retellings and feel "I could do that better" or "Now I can't use that one"?

I love both "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," and I haven't figured out how to write either one. I'm also very interested in "Aladdin" and "Rumpelstiltskin." I love Shannon Hale's THE GOOSE GIRL, so I may leave that one alone, but usually my idea goes in a direction that doesn't compete with another writer's conception.

I've always found compelling background characters to be a crucial part of all my favorite books, and yours are always chalk full of them. Do you have any favorites among them? Are any of them going to get their own books someday? Areida made an appearance in both "Fairest" and "Ella Enchanted", is there a chance Areida might be the heroine of her own book?
