Matthew Bird
Matthew Bird asked Tony Corden:

Could you please explain to me the difference between novice, apprentice, journeyman, and master as related to spell and skill levels in your books?

Tony Corden Matthew, sorry it has taken me so long to answer.

I understand the Novice to be someone who is just learning a trade, skill or spell. They have little control and experience. In the game, I think this is best represented for spells by low power, poor accuracy, and high mana usage. In skills, I think it can be best understood in the complexity of possible projects that can be completed.

An apprentice is someone who has mastered the basics but still requires guidance and experience.

The Journeyman has the skills mastered but needs more experience to begin adapting them to new and varied situations.

The Master can apply spells and skills to new situations and adapt how they are performed.

Players generally move through the stages through usage and success. Some players jump stages when they apply the skill or spell to a situation in a way that shows they have mastered the concepts.

Examples: Leah had to work her way through the mining skill through repeated action and success. She was able to jump to Master Level in Enchanting through the production of an Artifact. She won't be able to succeed consistently at this level without additional practice and success. She also lacks the basics of enchanting which will limit her ability to complete all Master Level Enchanting tasks.

I hope that helps. If I've made a mistake somewhere in the books, then please let me know. Just when I think my notes cover everything I find I forgot something.
