Peter asked Jennifer Haupt:

Thanks for recognising my review. My company has been working with hospitals in Uganda for the last 3 years, our CMO for over 30 years, and we've found the people extremely friendly and generous. When you were in Rwanda did you feel the people had moved on from the genocide? The Ugandans don't really want to talk about it. Did you base your characters on people you met there?

Jennifer Haupt Peter, thanks so much for your interest!

I was in Rwanda in 2006, interviewing genocide survivors and aid workers. I also found that the Rwandans did not want to talk about the genocide and the government discouraged them from doing so. The people who were the most open were the women who served as guides at the genocide memorials in the small towns -- churches and schools -- where thousands of people were murdered. Yes, I did base some of the characters on people I met in Rwanda, although they grew into their own people over the course of 11 years!
