For most of the book I thought Katie was a real person, and I kept thinking she was "out of character" for the type of person she was portraying. At the end of the story, she shows her friend Bri her drawings on the bus and I think those drawings are in fact the colored "Katie" sections throughout the book, and that now that she's found her voice and decided to overcome her embarrassment and accept herself for who she is, she doesn't need to pretend/believe that she would rather have a life like Katie's, which was an over simplification of life anyway. My daughter didn't see that at all. She thought Katie was a real person and that she and Emmie basically switched personalities/roles.(less)
