Susan Mahon
Susan Mahon asked:

Is this a good book for a book club?

Joan Cavin Yes, it is a fabulous book for book club. My book club selected it last May and I will be leading the review of it at our March get together.
Shannonmde I'm currently reading it. Would your book club be cool with a tie in to the musical Come from Away, either seeing it or listening to the soundtrack in addition to the book? -- from where I am in the book, it does seem like a lot of individual personal stories about that day.
Would your book club seem likely to want to talk about their own personal experiences on that day instead of the book? Is that okay with your group?
Laurie Shook We combined the reading book with seeing the play Come from Away for our Book Club project. It was interesting to see how the different media gave life to the material in different ways. I always struggled with what it means when someone wins an Academy award for "Best screenplay adaption." They did a fabulous job adapting a so-so book into an excellent musical, in my opinion.
Helen Yes! My book club actually decided against reading the book but I read it anyway. I am SO GLAD I did! I seldom re-read books, but this one is staying on my shelf - I am sure I will read it again and again!
Janell I'm planning to recommend this to my Mom for her book club. I think there are a lot of themes ... generosity, faith, what defines a friendship, etc. that are open for discussion. I'm guessing that attendees will also recall what happened to them on 9/11.
Gail Absolutely! A small community puts their lives on hold to help over a thousand folks who are stranded in Gander Newfoundland after the 9/11 attack on the U.S. Despite the horror of 9/11, the locals step up, the best of humanity A heartwarming story which brings such a diverse group of folks together will stay with me forever.
Randi We just had a book club discussion yesterday and I thought it went well considering we didn't think there was a lot to discuss. Talk went from the kindness of humanity to personal stories of that day. Questions such as "Whose story resonated the most with you?" and "How far would you have gone to help these people (ex. letting strangers into your home)?"
Elizabeth Hull I read this book because it was chosen by my book group, however, I wasn't able to go to the discussion. I probably would not choose this book for a book club, because even though some of the stories were heartwarming, I just didn't see that much that would lead to interesting discussions.
