Duane asked:

Would anybody be paying any attention to this book if the author hadn't suicided? (Note, I would too if my mommy had named me after JFK.)

John Holck Not many people were named after JFK in 1937.
Duane Having failed miserably in my attempt to impugn JFK by association, I'm still wondering if this book would have ever gotten on the radar if O'Toole hadn't suicided.

I'm starting to feel sorry for the guy though... You wonder how many rejected authors there are, who stay permanently rejected. I know of at least one who was so frustrated with his failure to achieve publication that he left instructions with his "heirs" to burn every word he ever wrote, after he was gone.

Meanwhile though,m I see O'Toole has now achieved further recognition for having been pulled out of the trash...

I think, yeah, I'd rather disappear into obscurity than end up getting mooned over posthumously...
