For my novel, there were VERY specific circumstances which I touch upon both in the Foreword and then in more detail in the actual narrative. In general? While writing it, I mostly just remembered the reasons why I was going through with it in the first place, and then forced myself to do the work. All of that is much easier said than done, especially if you are fighting depression.
