It's interesting to think about, isn't it? I tried to put myself in Stefan's shoes and came up with this: He and Vic had a normal (ish) courtship, but then a change in institutional regime left them with nothing but occasional glimpses of and stolen moments with one another. And then one day Vic was just gone. It must've felt like the boyfriend that suddenly stops calling you for no reason, tinged with the nagging fear that maybe he's died. A decade later, an awkward message appears on his answering machine, but no apology. Hmm.
