Karolina asked Lois Lowry:

I remember first reading the Anastasia series at age ten or eleven and enjoying it immensely Recently I decided to reread the books and I think I have enjoyed it even better, being able to notice the literary allusions. My question is: did you intend the book to have a double intended-audience, the child and the adult? Do you have a picture of the future reader in mind? Does it vary from book to book?

Lois Lowry Yes, there are many references in the Anastasia books that a young audience will not get. But I tried to write them in a way that would make that unimportant. In addition, I think I hoped that eventually, as the reader gets older, and reads more and learns more, she/she will look back with a sense of recognition and amusement.
