Growing up as an identical twin, I was always surprised/fascinated by the way people compared me with my sister, physically, intellectually, etc. I knew I wanted to look at beauty standards and how arbitrary and subjective they are, so I wrote a culture in which beauty alone determines your fate (in the case of Nor and Zadie, it all comes down to a single scar). And then I wanted to flip that around and look at how what we might see as our weaknesses can actually be our strengths.
