Can someone explain to me (yes, I've tried looking online already) exactly how the naming of peerage works? In the book, we have Carter Alexander Harford, Seventh Viscount of Devereaux, and his wife Miranda Harford. She introduces him as "Lord Devereaux", and she is called "Lady Devereaux" by the footman. But then Carter refers to her as "Lady Gibbons" twice - (at least to where I've read) Help!?!

Often a man would have one title before his father's death, then assume his father's title at his passing and pass the old title on to a son, or other heir.(less)
