(view spoiler)[I really liked the character of Poppy in the Magician King. I thought the relationship between her and Quentin was quite entertaining so I was a bit disappointed that her role was so greatly reduced in the final book. Was there a reason for this? And was the character inspired by anything or anyone? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I liked her too. But I didn't know where to take her. She's definitely going to evolve as a character, and deepen, when she has kids (as will Josh), but that didn't seem like a good arc for a fantasy novel. Or at least I didn't know how to tell it.
Also, anecdotally speaking, she's not a fan favorite. You're the only person who's ever asked about her.
(re: being based on someone, her Australian-ness is undoubtedly related to my having gotten married to an Australian) (hide spoiler)]

Lev Grossman:
It's obvious Fillory is heavily influenced by Narnia. I was wondering if you're a fan of The Narnia books and if so how long you've been one? Was Fillory meant as a tribute to or a satire of Narnia? Would Fillory take the place of Narnia or do you imagine that one of those many fountains in the Neitherlands could lead to Narnia itself.

Hi Lev! Your story about writerly isolation in the "How Not To Write Your First Novel" article on Buzzfeed recalled many details you used in the more "training montage" sections of The Magicians. It seems that you don't subscribe to the idea of shutting yourself away to try to master a skill or produce a piece of work - so what's your current writing process and how have you sought to develop your writing skills?
