On a scale of 1 to 10, (feel free to describe the process in detail, might you wish to give a future-author some advice) how difficult was the path that got you to where you are today, not just the book-writing experiences, but also the process of getting someone to be interested in your book and to actually give it a chance?

Are you talking about THE GIVER? You didn't say which title and I have written many books. But for THE GIVER, the number would be a 10. I already had a publisher and an editor so I didn't have to go through the lengthy process that a first book sometimes requires.

I am a big fan of The Giver. Our library system now collects it in our regular circulating collection and our Classics collection. It's recommended or required reading at many schools. Did you ever imagine that it would become such a huge success? To what do you attribute its widespread appeal?
