Jewel asked Katherine Arden:

I've read a couple of books that are sort of similar in tone to your series ( like Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente and Uprooted by Naomi Novik) but though I loved their fairy tale- esque tone, I couldn't emotionally connect with the characters because of it like I so easily could with your book. Do you have any fairy tale book recommendations that don't keep you at a distance from the characters?

Katherine Arden Have you read any of Robin McKinley's books? Those were the fairy-tale retellings I loved growing up. Beauty, Spindle's End, Rose Daughter, Deerskin...are all great. (also if you haven't read her Damar series, probably read those too) Another good one to check out is The King Must Die by Mary Renault. It's an historical retelling of the myth of Theseus and one of my all-time favorite books
