A Goodreads user asked Michael Grant:

It was a brilliant idea to kill Caine off, I have to say. "In a blaze of glory." Was there any decision making when you decided to kill off Caine, or did you just randomly come up with it? If you did have a decision making process, what were the reasons for killing him off? (I just really have to know coz I ADORE killing off my characters and kinda need some guidelines there. xP)

Michael Grant As I was nearing the end of LIGHT I was still not sure, but I suspected it would go this way. I write improvisationally, figuring it out as I go along and I had a notion that one of the Big Four (Sam, Astrid, Diana and Caine) would have to die - redemption has always been a big theme with me. Then it just came together on the page.
