A Goodreads user asked:

What was the plot value of Lenore being transgender? I usually feel like when a detail like that is included, it is important to the story/plot development/outcome in some way. This fact felt random. It wasn't bad, I just wonder if maybe I missed something? Or was this just an interesting back story for the character?

sublimosa in addition to the other answers, Karin Slaughter characters are so much more than what they appear to be on the surface, as both Charlie and Sam and Rusty and Mason As most humans are. This is an essential part of why she is such a compelling writer.
Laura Temming This was one of my favorite plot twists, ever! I didn't see that one coming, at all. I don't think that it necessarily added to her character development, but it provided an interesting back story for the whole family.
Shelby There was no plot value. It seemed really random and didn't really do anything for the story! I agree that it wasn't a bad thing but added length onto the book that wasn't needed.
