Lois Lowry:
Three of my favorite books when I was a kid were Anastasia's Chosen Career, Taking Care of Terrific, and A Summer to Die. (I say when I was growing up but they're all still on my bookshelves.) I didn't realize until later that they were all written by the same person, because they seemed different. I guess I wonder how you manage to switch from serious to more day-to-day topics but still have the novels seem genuine.

It's the same way I might cook Chinese food for dinner one night and spaghetti the next... I'd get bored if I wrote the same kind of book over and over again, or if I made pot roast for dinner night after night...

Dear Lois: The geographic boundaries that surrounded Jonas' people was a major concern while reading the book. Did they live in a tiny bubble, were they an experimental population, how vast was the space they lived in? The Giver was transformative for me, I'm glad that the book was promoted to youth, advanced as it was. You painted a vivid picture of a setting so insipid & elegantly presented tough concepts
