Kimberley asked:

What do the actual workouts consist of? Does he just tell you how long each interval should be, or does he actually tell you WHAT to do, such as run, walk, lift weights, etc? Are these workouts something that can be adapted for someone who only have workout shoes and a few sets of free weights, or do you need a gym membership or spin bike?

AP The workouts have no specific exercises. He introduces each workout by discussing the research backing the workout format, the intended exercisers. Each workout provides an HIIT schedule and guides the times spent for warm-up, high intensity interval, low intensity interval, and cool down. You can choose whichever exercises you’d like - walking, running, biking, climbing stairs, swimming, body weight resistance exercises, and more. No special equipment or gym membership needed. E.g., the Midwestern workout consists of:
3 min warm-up
20 sets of alternating 30 sec hi intensity intervals with 30 sec lo intensity intervals
2 min cool-down
Total workout time = 25 min
Total time of high intensity exercise = 10 min

Go get the book from your local library and read it. All of this book’s workouts can be programmed into an interval timer app (Seconds or IntervalTimer) on a smartphone. You can work out anywhere, any time.
